Patch & Play

Logo and poster design for a digital music patching event in Bristol.

I was commissioned to design a promo poster for Patch & Play, a live music production workshop in Bristol, run by musician Leena Zhané and sponsored by Grand Plan.

To kick things off, I was sent similar posters to communicate the visual direction of the design, which included bright colours and dynamic lettering.

My art style leans towards hand-drawn imagery and visual wordplay, so I wanted to bring that playfulness to the design while still fitting the theme of the event. The inspo posters didn't use photographs or images and instead had the event name and supporting graphics as the visual focus, so I decided to make that the focal-point and created a logo design as well.

I incorporated production equipment iconography into the lettering, specifically synth keys, control knobs, and sliders, as instrumentation is a big focus of the event. I wanted to incorporate wires as well to reflect the event's focus on audio patching (hence the name "Patch & Play"), so I drew an aux cable to form the ampersand, with one end plugged into "Patch" and the other into "Play", visually (and audio-ly) connecting the two words together.

Subsequent drafts included more wires connecting the date and other event details to the event name, but it all looked a bit too messy, so we went for something more minimal and stuck to a hierarchical layout of the text instead.

The final poster and logo design were sent off, along with an editable Canva file so the event details could be updated and design reused for future events.
